Newcastle2002
Southern Highlands Woodturners
1st Club Overnight Excursion
The Hunter United Woodworking & Craft Expo
August 16th 2002
When we suggested an overnight excursion to the Newcastle Wood & Craft Show, nobody expected some 20 names on the board. So why should we not try this new form of outing particularly to an area like Newcastle which has so much to offer?
A quick phone call to the Woodshow organiser, Mr Keith Boaz, who recommended, The Tudor Inn Motel at Hamilton for accommodation, and he also suggested that we should enjoy the hospitality of the Hamilton Bowling Club directly opposite the Motel.
On the Friday morning, members found their own way to the Newcastle Entertainment Centre where the show was under way for the first of a 3 day show. The show took two forms.
- Building (1) contained wood items only, a large show of excellent exhibitors. In particular there was a huge variety of timbers available at very reasonable prices.
- Building (2), consisted of a full pavilion of craft displays of every imaginable craft.
Members wives who became absorbed in this part of the show agreed that it was almost as big as the Sydney Craft Expo.
When our day at the show was over, it was back to the Motel and on to the Bowling Club to enjoy the good food and hospitality of the evening.
Saturday morning saw some couples move on to other venues, but a group took time to view Newcastle harbour area for a cup of coffee, and then on to Morpeth where and excellent day of sightseeing and craft was had by all.
It was then back to our homes, where I feel everybody had a most enjoyable couple of days.
This is a good show and worth another visit in the future.
